Day 10 Glitter and Glam Challenge

This is one of my favorite designs to date. I had just come back from the BayFaba convention in San Francisco and was so inspired by the workshop I took with Matteo Arfanotti and of course being in the company of one of my most favorite people in the whole world Ronnie Mena for 3 days totally influenced this Creepy Clown makeup look.
I used Diamantes de Tigre one of my favorite glitters from Sugar Glitter on this design.

FOTD Swirl Sugar Skull

About 2 months ago I painted this sugar skull on myself. The response from everyone was so awesome. I wasn't expecting it at all in fact, Heather Banks from Sillyfarm noticed it and asked if she could use it on the website for the month of October. Of course I said yes, what an honor it is for the CEO of the largest Face Paint supply website in the United States to notice your work.

I love clicking over there and seeing my face there. When I'm feeling insecure about my work I will save this image and look back at it. I don't think I'll ever feel like my work is that great. I always feel as if there is so much more to learn. If I ever stop learning it will be time to leave this business.

Anyway I do hope you enjoy this Sugar skull or Calavera. I used the Ben Nye lumieres palette, Wolfe White and Deep Raspberry, Starblend black and White and Mehron Celebre pro foundation.

FOTD Venetian style Peacock mask

Every year around this time of year I begin to get flooded with private appointments for Halloween parties and this year was no exception. A look or design that is highly requested every year is a peacock mask. I decided to buckle down and work this design out.

I pulled out my sequins and gold powder to create this combination of metal and bling. Ben Nye lumieres were used for the base colors and eyes hadows.

I practice on myself rather than a practice head because I like the feel of skin lol! Here are a few selfies taken with my cell phone. I hope you are able to draw inspiration from this design and create something all your own.

Halloween monster face painting

I know it seems early to be talking about Halloween face painting but, in my world Halloween preperation started a month ago. Yes, August! A lot of thought goes into what I practice each year. This year I'm practicing my scary monsters. I've been playing around with Starblend cake makeup and of course some blood and fx. I'm think about purchasing some Zombie skin in the next couple of days to make some ugly scars and great zombie effects. In the mean time here are a few of my recent faces made with face paint and makeup. I hope you enjoy and feel inspired just as so many talented artists have inspired these.

Dia De Los Muertos Sugar skulls 2012

Two years ago I began face painting just before Halloween per my son's request to paint him like a Zombie. A friend of mine noticed me practicing and asked me to paint her like a Sugar Skull. Can I just tell you how nervous I was. She showed me a photo from a very famous face and body painter and I was shaking in my flip flops. Now 2 years later I have had much practice and am finding my own style. I love to paint my calaveras with bright, bold colors that just pop. I love painting pretty, it's hard for me to paint monsters because I want to make them pretty lol! Anyway here are a few of my recent Sugar Skulls or Calaveras I painted at a recent Sugar skull themed birthday party. I hope you enjoy and are inspired to get creative and have fun this Dia de Los Muertos.

Zombie makeup for Halloween

Here is my Zombie boy. He has asked me every year if he could be a Zombie and now that his siblings are old enough not to be scared out of their wits I said o.k. This is what we came up with. It is a combination of makeup and face paint, latex and fake blood. This was very fun and gross to work on. I hope it inspires the artist in you. If your not into gore check out my simple, less scary Halloween looks for boys here.

Love and grossness,
Shawna

Sugar skull or Dia de Los Muertos makeup

Last year my very first face painting job was a Sugar Skull or Calaca which I have to say although I knew I could do it, I still had butterflies in my stomach and was nervous to try something new. This year however, I am very comfortable and confident in my skills and was excited to paint a few for Sugar Skulls for Dia de Los Muertos. I belong to lovely community of makeup artists and face painters and have drawn inspiration from my colleagues and hope you will be able to take inspiration from these.
Here are a few of the Dia de Los Muertos makeup jobs I had including one self portrait or painting LOL.
Love & Sugar Skulls,
Shawna

Poison Ivy Headband tutorial

This is the Step by Step Tutorial to make the Poison Ivy Headband I was wearing in my You Tube Tutorial for Poison Ivy Make-up.
You'll need the follwing supplies:
Fabric or craft glue
Hot Glue gun
Silk leaves
Green Ribbon
Thin plastic or metal headband
Yellow irridescent or green glitter
Scissors

Step 1. Add a small dollup of hot glue to the inside bottom of your headband then, quickly press the end of your ribbon to line up with the edge of your headband.
Step 2. start wrapping the ribbon around your headband till you get to the other end. try to smooth and pull the ribbon tight as you go around each time.
Step 3. When you get to the other side add another dollup of glue and cut the ribbon to line up with the edge of your headband.

Step 4. Add a thin layer of glu to the edgde and center of your leaves. I just used my finger but, you could use a brush or q-tip.

Step 5. Sprinkle the glitter onto your leaves. Then shake off the excess onto a paper towel.

Step 6. Start hot glueing your leaves onto your headband. Try to squish the center of the leaves together to give the leaves a little height and texture.
