Superhero party face painting (Makeup Monday)

This weekend was jam packed with parties. One of my favorite parties was a Superhero themed party. The birthday boy wanted to be The Flash and his mom was sweet enough to request a matching design. I also painted a makeup inspired Spider-Man look and a first request for me for the “new Wonderwoman” crown, which I’m so pleasantly pleased with. All of these designs were a first for me and by first I mean, the first time I’ve tried them in this style.
I even used a new Red face paint  from Cameleon called Fire and absolutely loved the opaque, true Red color. It’s not new to the line, but it was new to me. How was your weekend. What new designs did you try? Leave a comment below.

New face painting classes with Shawna Del Real for 2018

This past summer I announced I was going to offer a Sugar Skull workshop with my partner in crime Ronnie Mena and the response from cities all over the U.S. was incredibly surprising! I was shocked at how many face painters and makeup artists wanted to learn our style of makeup and face painting in a hands on workshop. It was so successful we were asked over and over again to come back and offer a 2 day workshop next year...shhhhh that's in the works now.

Although I've traveled for a few years teaching, this past year of touring the U.S. was the first major full time season of teaching and through it I quickly realized there was a higher demand for more of my fusion beauty style of makeup and face painting, so with that I have put together some new workshops and revamped some of my older workshops for the 2018 season.
All of my students will tell you I am huge on teaching skill and technique as that is what I believe makes me a better artist and will make you a better artist. You can never stop learning when it comes to anything you love and feel passionate about.

In 2018 I will be offering 4 workshops to choose from with workshops 1 & 2 and workshops 3 & 4 being complements to each other for 2 days of learning fun. You can check out which face painting workshops I will be offering here

I am currently in the planning phase and am looking for willing hosts from cities and states all over the world. If you would like more information on being a host or know someone who would be please contact me. I will send you everything you need to get started hosting a face painting workshop in your area.

I am looking forward to seeing some new faces this season and some old friendly faces as well. I love meeting you all and do plan on spending more time in each city getting to hang out with and have some free fun time I promise!

Pink kitty face painting mask FOTD

When it comes to painting cats I prefer to paint mask style designs for a few reasons.

1. I feel like they are sexier on women. They take on sort of a venetian style or feel and cats always make women feel playful and sexy.

2. They look adorable on kids. Enough said. Kitty or Tiger masks win hands down as adorableness overload every time.

3. There is less of a chance of messing it up. How often have you painted a full face Tiger and the child immediately presses their lips together before the paint has dried and ruins the lips? When you skip the muzzle kids can still eat and look cute through the entire party.

4. Speed. Masks are always great when you have a ton of designs to paint. I am not by any means a super fast painter in fact, I prefer to stay between 10-15 designs per hour but, I can tell you this, skipping the muzzle means cutting the time by at least a quarter and you still get a wow from everyone when you're done.

Those are my reasons and of course if you've ever taken one of my face painting classes you will remember me saying "Always complete the look".  Don't forget to line the eyes and add a pretty lip color to match if it will complete the look of your design.

In this design I used a multi media technique which I always tend to do because I feel like I can get a more dimensional look when I mix makeup mediums.

Here I used not only aqua paints but, eyeshadows, pigments and glitters (Glitter used here is Violeta by Sugar Face and Body Art) and yes before you even ask I do this on the job too. It only takes a few seconds to add a pretty pigment on top of or instead of water activated makeup.  I hope you enjoy this look and are inspired to create your own version.

Happy Painting my friends,

Shawna

Up comming face painting Workshops and Classes

In case you missed it, I will be teaching two face painting classes and one face painting workshop at the Bayfaba convention in San Francisco at the end of this month.

In my first class I will be teaching you a couple of Masquerade Mask designs from simple to elaborate. These designs are best suited for teens and adults. The designs taught in this class are considered private appointment designs or designs that you can use to wow your clients. This is not your average party face design.

In my second class I will be teaching you Creative eye designs including designs that can be used at Children's parties and at Adult events. I will show you how to "Complete the look" by adding a few quick details to make your designs photo ready.

I will be teaming up with Ronnie Mena on Sunday in a 6 hour Sugar Skull workshop. You will be learning hands on techniques including placement and elements that define a feminine or masculine Sugar Skull. Note - This workshop is not included in your registration cost.

To sign up for this convention simply head over to www.bayfaba.com and check out all of the other amazing classes being offered. I look forward to see you there.

Happy Painting my friends,
Shawna

Birds of a feather face painting

Friday night I was stalking the internet looking for a beautiful bird to paint on my face for my Saturday gig. I decided to basically copy a design from my friend and all around amazing artist Ronnie Mena. Little did I know and without any advanced planning that he painted a bird on his face too for our gig together. It's true what they say "Birds of a feather flock together" I'm so glad to have such amazing people in my life that I admire and call my friends.

Who are the amazing people in your life that inspire you? Let's inspire each other on this Makeup Monday.

Christmas Face painting designs

This Christmas I have created a few new face painting and Makeup designs to share with you. I like to create a design then, do different versions of it. Maybe one for women and girls, one for Men and Boys and a fast version of all of them. It's always great to have some quick ones in your back pocket for the faster paced gigs. Some of these were designs I wore to my gigs and other's were painted on my clients. I was just lucky enough to capture a few of the designs I painted to share with you here.

Anyway I hope you are able to draw inspiration from these to create your own Christmas Face Painting designs. I Hope you are blessed this Christmas season and have a great Christmas Day with your family and friends.

Why I love Holiday sets

It's that special time of year again. That time when everything sparkles and shines and one of the most beautiful things happens with some of my favorite cosmetic lines. They do this magical thing just for me (well, maybe not just for me). They put together awesome kits and sets of typically their best selling products and usually in smaller sizes. Do you even know what that means to me? It means I can add multiple products in small sizes to my KIT!!!! AHHHH I'm screaming inside. I am a minimalist at heart, I hate big bulking packaging and even more I hate have to depot products into smaller containers so, this is EVERYTHING to my minimalist heart.
I could really go broke during the holidays simply re-stocking my kit but, most of these products last at least til the next year for me at least.

Here are a few of my picks and some I look forward to buying every year.....

Too faced Shadow insurance primers in the Original and Champagne.

Stila Lip Glaze set.. This is an all star in my kit

I have personally been wearing the heck out of this melted kisses set. I bought mine early. I'm not sure if it is still available right now. If not get the regular size in Nude. It's amazeballs!

This is another personal favorite. The Laura Geller Baked Starter set. I love to carry the small sized blush and powder foundation in my own purse. It's a great way to try the colors in her line as well. I really enjoy Laura Gellers products. They are beautiful. Laura please come out with a pro discount so I can buy more for my kit! I love that her mineral products are pressed. big bonus for makeup that travels a lot.

These double ended eyeliners from Urban Decay are perfect for trying to keep a condensed kit.

These Bronzers from Too Faced are so gorgeous and what better way to add them to your kit than in these small sizes.

The only thing you can't find for your kit is foundations and concealers. That is something you'll just have to buy in larger sizes and decant or depot. You can even find skincare in smaller sizes but typically they are for a specific skin type. I personally keep Josie Maran Argan oil in the original and in light in my kit and it works on all of my clients.

What are your favorite Makeup kit products? Share the wealth below or on my facebook page.

Bow face painting tutorial (Makeup Monday)

It's been a while since my last post and for that I am sorry. I've been extremely busy with various projects but, I wanted to stop and share a little Step By step face painting Tutorial with you. I don't normally share these types of tutorials so, enjoy this little gem as a special holiday Easter gift from me to you.

Step 1. Pull out your favorite One stroke split cake. I've used Cupcake Arty cake given to me by SillyFarm.com
Step 2. Using a #10 Filbert load the darker side of your splitcake in order to richer color. Make a circle using the flat part of your brush.
Step 3. Using the tip of the brush start at the center of your circle and as you come out flatten your brush down to make the sides of the bows. Make a 3 on the right side and and E on the left side.
Step 4. Color in your bow
Step 5. Make the tails of your bow
Step 6. Using a #1 script liner load your brush with black and outline your bow with a thin line.
Step 7. Using a #3 round load your brush in grey and add some shading. While the paint is still wet take a 1/4 DM Stippler dry brush and drag the grey paint to blend it out.
Step 8. Load the lighter colors from your split cake onto your filbert and add some highlights. Take more of the darker paint and blend so there are no definite lines.

TADA you are finished with your beautiful bow.

You can always simplify this by leaving off the tails and forgoing the shading portion if you are in a rush. Makes a great base bow for tons of designs including Minnie Mouse.

I hope you are able to use this on your next event.

The best beauty tip ever (Makeup Monday)

Today's Makeup Monday is a little different. My best advice on beauty is that you are created in HIS image. You are beautiful before God's eyes so, does it really matter what others say about you?

No matter what when you put yourself out there people will talk about you good and bad. It doesn't matter what anyone says about you. What matters is what God says about you....So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (Genisis 1:27). In all things God works for the good of those who love him. (Romans 8:28)... God is for me! Who can be against me? (Romans 8:31)

I have always prayed with my kids and asked that the light of God shine through us in all that we do and say... I am a light in the world (Mt 5:14)... I am a light to others, and can exhibit goodness, righteousness and truth (Eph 5:8-9). I am not perfect. I slip up, I make mistakes (more than I'd like to admit) but, I have been redeemed through HIS grace. I'm here to tell you that the most beautiful you is the you God created. He created you with beautiful gifts to share with the world not to keep and hoard for yourself and your own glory but for HIS glory.

I only want to glorify him with the gifts he has given me and I hope that I bless each and every person that I touch. In this world there are many that will try to steal your peace. Don't let them. I have peace (Eph 2:14) Find your Peace, Love and Strength in HIM!

Go out today and be the beautiful you that God created you to be. That is my best beauty advice. Let his love and light shine through you. That is the most beautiful you will ever be!

Floral Lace Face painting (Makeup Monday)

Over the weekend I had a gig where I was asked do do some makeup for some tween girls. They were having a Parisian themed party complete with beautiful masquerade masks.  The girls wanted me to paint their faces to match their masks so, I thought it was only fitting to paint an adult version of a lacy mask on myself before I arrived.

This is what I came up with. I hope you are inspired to create a lacy design yourself.

I used the following products for this look:
On my eyes:
Bare Minerals eyeshadows in Envy and Chameleon, La Femme eyebrow powder as a crease shadow, Navy eyeshadow from the Coastal Scents 42 Stack Palette, Ben Nye Lumiere eyeshadow in Azure as eyeliner under my eyes and Blacktrack fluid line eyeliner.
Face Paint:
Metallic opal paint from Kryolan and White Shimmer powder from Guerlain
Cameleon white, Custom Blue Rose split cake and custom leaf split cake.
